Storybooks as a way to improve language and cultural literacy

Storybooks as a way to improve language and cultural literacy for foreign students within Iuliu Hatieganu University, Cluj

Aim:
Developing reading and writing skills in Romanian as a second language for foreign students through improving linguistic creativity by using images, story-bird platform and social media networks.

Partners:
Medical Education Department, Chair Modern Languages, Faculty of Medicine, Iuliu Hațieganu University, Cluj-Napoca
Activities:
• Teacher training to develop literacy competences (reading and writing for foreign students, cultural and intercultural literacy and visual literacy) and to learn how to use storybooks creating platform
• Creation of 4-5 storybooks by lecturers, depending on the students’ language level of Romanian
• Creation of a teacher’s account on the platform to manage the on-line instruments and evaluation (bookstories: the images/ icons will help students to be introduced to new grammer and vocabulary information easily)
• Students asignments: creation of 1-2 storybooks, as a participative/ alternative evaluation, for different levels of language comprehension
• Publish the final form of the storybooks on the platform
Results:
• 4-5 storybooks, created by lecturers on different language levels as teaching instruments
• 1-2 storybooks per student to evaluate their language competences and development
Disemination:
• Presentation of the project results within Modern Languages Chair, UMF Cluj
• Publishing the results of the bookstory project on the Pro Literacy Association website
